mixed media installation, detail, 2011

This Day of the Dead installation-ofrenda is dedicated to victims of homophobic hate crimes and was part of an event at Michigan State University aimed at raising awareness on prejudice against sexual orientation. In the United States, Mexican communities have turned the Day of the Dead into a public celebration of Mexican/Chicano cultures, a venue to create art reflecting on collective experiences, an opportunity to bring the community together and a way to raise awareness of the issues affecting the lives of people in current times. This installation was exhibited at the Michigan State University Museum in 2011.
